We are thrilled to showcase the remarkable talents of one of our ARNAA members, Dr Isaac Koomson

What is your current academic or research role?
I am a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Queensland’s Centre for the Business and Economics of Health (CBEH). I also serve as a Faculty Director with the Centre for Social Development at the Brown School in Washington University in St. Louis, United States. Additionally, I serve as a guest lecturer in Quantitative Research Methods at the University of North Carolina and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States.
What does your work focus on?
My current research focuses on the intersection of health and development economics, encompassing societal healthcare issues like child health (i.e., malnutrition), healthcare utilisation, out-of-pocket health expenditures, nutrition, and mental health. My studies also help tackle global community challenges, including disease outbreak vulnerability, poverty, food insecurity and energy poverty. I have worked on projects as a consultant for the World Bank. I have also worked for the United Nations. Additionally, I have collaborated with other policy-oriented research institutes.
Which aspects of your work do you enjoy the most?
I love delving into new areas of research. I particularly enjoy applying econometrics and emerging data science and analytic techniques. These tools help build evidence on how to enhance health and socioeconomic outcomes. I am equally happy to supervise students and see them graduate.
How do you like to relax or spend your spare time?
When I am away from the computer, I usually spend time in the garden, stay at home with family, or head to the pitch to play soccer over the weekend. I also enjoy watching movies.
